African Masks

The African Masks Bracelet is a sculptural composition formed by a sequence of articulated miniature masks arranged along the wrist, creating a jewel that moves fluidly with the body while maintaining a strong architectural presence. Ceremonial, symbolic and intensely graphic, the piece balances rhythm and structure through repetition and variation.

Across the bracelet, the composition is built from distinct mask types that alternate and reappear, generating a subtle dialogue between symmetry, inversion and displacement. This interplay creates a continuous visual narrative, where each element contributes to a sense of movement and ritual continuity.

Inspired by the power of African ceremonial objects, the piece evokes protection, transformation and the presence of ancestral figures. Each mask draws from a specific visual and symbolic lineage: the elongated, bird-like form recalls Ligbi traditions from West Africa, associated with spiritual mediation and connection to nature; the multi-faced element references Lega Bwami culture, where masks embody moral knowledge and initiatory wisdom; while softer, more rounded features echo Kwele aesthetics, historically linked to harmony, healing and communal balance. The angular geometry of certain masks further alludes to Lwalwa sculptural traditions, known for their striking equilibrium and ritual significance.

Rather than literal reproductions, these forms are reinterpreted through a sculptural jewellery language — distilled, recomposed and brought into dialogue along the wrist. Their deliberately rustic sculptural quality preserves the expressive force of the original sources, giving the bracelet a raw presence that is balanced by the refinement of its materials.

The alternating metals heighten this rhythm: silver elements, polished, left raw or plated in black rhodium, create depth and shadow, while bronze elements finished in 18k gold plating introduce warmth and luminosity. Emerald-set details punctuate the composition with flashes of vivid green light, adding a subtle sense of vitality and contrast.

Cast using the cire perdue technique and assembled by hand, each mask is conceived as an individual sculptural unit, then connected through articulated links that allow natural movement and reinforce the totemic character of the piece.

Both ornamental and expressive, the African Masks Bracelet transforms the wrist into a site of narrative and presence — a jewel that feels talismanic, rare, sculptural and unmistakably spiritual.
