Pour Iole, daybed

Pour Iole is a tribute to the Brazilian sculptor Iole de Freitas, whose open circular lines, transparent planes and balance between strength and lightness have long been part of Marcella Virzi’s visual vocabulary.

Arc was conceived as a tribute to both Lygia Clark and Iole de Freitas, with Pour Lygia and Pour Iole developed almost as a pair. In both pieces, questions that run through the work of the two artists intersect, each with a different emphasis.

In Pour Iole, the circle is interrupted once. The wooden arc becomes both support and profile, while the upholstered cylinders sit within its open ends, partially occupying the geometry and giving weight to the curve.

The relationship between wood and upholstery brings hard and soft, structure and comfort into the same line. The open centre keeps the interruption visible, allowing empty space to remain part of the structure.
