Pour Lygia, daybed
Pour Lygia is a tribute to the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark, whose work with sequence, interruption and changing geometric forms has long been part of Marcella Virzi’s visual vocabulary.
Arc was conceived as a tribute to both Lygia Clark and Iole de Freitas, with Pour Lygia and Pour Iole developed almost as a pair. In both pieces, questions that run through the work of the two artists intersect, each with a different emphasis.
In Pour Lygia, the repeated arc creates a sequence of interruptions that recalls Caminhando, where a continuous form unfolds through cutting and choice. The wooden hollows and upholstered cylinders suggest two possible conditions of the same geometry, one remaining open, the other becoming volume.
Repetition becomes both structure and movement. A rhythm forms between the wooden hollows and upholstered cylinders, alternating empty and filled space along the length of the piece. The continuous wooden curves require precise shaping and joinery, making the craftsmanship part of the structure itself.
